Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for a stop to wasting of food and for promotion of thrift.

近日，中国国家主席习近平提倡坚决制止餐饮浪费行为，要求厉行节俭。

 In a recent directive, Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, described the phenomenon of food waste as "shocking and distressing."

中共中央总书记、中央军委主席习近平在近日的一项指示中指出，餐饮浪费现象，“触目惊心、令人痛心!”

 On the dining plate, every single grain means hardship, he said.

“谁知盘中餐，粒粒皆辛苦。”

 "Though China has reaped a bumper grain harvest for years, it is still necessary to have the awareness of a food security crisis. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic this year has sounded the alarm for us," Xi stressed.

习近平指出，“尽管我国粮食生产连年丰收，对粮食安全还是始终要有危机意识，今年全球新冠肺炎疫情所带来的影响更是给我们敲响了警钟。”

 He called for more efforts to strengthen legislation and supervision and establish a long-term mechanism that will resolutely stop food wasting.

习近平强调，要加强立法，强化监管，采取有效措施，建立长效机制，坚决制止餐饮浪费行为。

 He said it is necessary to further strengthen public education, cultivate the habit of thrift and advocate to the whole society that it is shameful to waste and an honor to save.

他指出，要进一步加强宣传教育，切实培养节约习惯，在全社会营造浪费可耻、节约为荣的氛围。

 A total of 133 Chinese companies are on this year's Fortune Global 500 list, including those from Hong Kong and Taiwan, Fortune magazine announced on Monday.

 China takes a leading role among countries on the list, followed by the US with 121 companies.

China's per capita gross national income (GNI) crossed $10,000 for the first time in 2019, with its global ranking climbing up 70 places from 2000, National Business Daily reported on Monday.

据《每日经济新闻》8月10日报道，2019年，中国人均国民总收入首次突破1万美元（约合人民币6.9万元），全球排名较2000年提高70位。

 The country's per capita GNI further rose to $10,410 last year, higher than the average level of upper middle-income countries of $9,074 of the same year, the report said, citing article by Zhang Jun, director of the International Statistical Information Center of the National Bureau of Statistics.

报道援引国家统计局国际统计信息中心主任张军的文章称，去年我国人均国民总收入进一步上升至10410美元（约合人民币7.2万元），高于中等偏上收入国家9074美元（约合人民币6.3万元）的平均水平。

 China's per capita GNI was just $940 in 2000 and was classified as one of the lower-middle income countries by the World Bank back then.

the 12th edition of Xinhua Dictionary

 The 12th edition of Xinhua Dictionary, published on Monday after nine years since its last edition, has added new words and definitions shaped by the internet and social progress, reflecting the development of the country and characteristics of the times.

《新华字典》（第12版）于8月10日发行上市，距上一次修订时隔9年，增补了一些随网络和社会进步而涌现、反映国家发展和时代特征的新词和新定义。

 The new dictionary includes more than 100 new words and expressions, such as "chu xin" (original aspiration), "fen si" (fans) , "jie ping" (screenshots), "er wei ma" (QR code), and "dian zan" (click the "like" button). In addition, it has added 50 new definitions and usages, including "mai meng" (acting cute), "pin che" (carpool), "pin gou" (shopping pool), and "bei hui yuan" (involuntarily being a member).
